What is Classic World of Warcraft?

This is a Wiki to describe Classic World of Warcraft, as it existed in late 2006 with Patch 1.12.1. It is meant to complement classic or "vanilla" WoW private server projects. Our aim is complete authenticity in describing World of Warcraft as of Patch 1.12.1. While some private servers may take liberties with accuracy, we do not.

How is classic WoW different from the modern version?

  • The level cap is 60.
  • There's no Outland, Northrend or Cataclysm zones.
  • Leveling is arguably tougher.
  • There are no playable worgen, goblins, draenei or blood elves.
    • Consequently, the Alliance can not play a Shaman and the Horde cannot play a Paladin!
      • No Death Knights.
  • None of the new class choices for races introduced in Cataclysm. For instance, humans cannot be hunters and orcs cannot be mages.
  • Players can gain PvP ranks.
  • The original npc models for goblins, worgens, druid forms, etc. are used.
  • The old talents & talent tress are used, along with classic spells & abilities.
  • Original Attributes, and their effects still remain.

More feature details can be found here.

How are private servers different from retail?

  • There is no monthly fee, the game is free-to-play.
  • The game is downloaded for free, there is no reason to buy the game discs.
  • Fixes will be installed via changing how game content reacts & works, but no actual 'new' content is added... therefore, you never need to download new patches.

About this Wiki

This Wiki is an ongoing project to document World of Warcraft as it was during Patch 1.12.1 in 2006, immediately before the launch of The Burning Crusade.

While originally stemming from Project Westfall, this wiki exists to support all classic WoW interests by providing information and documentation of the classic experience.

Important Notice to all Editors

I'll be setting up templates for pages soon which will hopefully make it a lot easier to add pages.

If you are starting a new page for a quest can you please name it with Quest: at the start.

Quest:Wolves Across the Border for example.
